What is an Employment Counsellor?

An Employment Counsellor advises, coaches, provides information to, and supports people who are planning, seeking and managing their life/work direction. Employment counsellors may work with individuals to provide one on one assistance, or with groups, providing more generalized advice. They talk to people to find out where their skills and talents lie, and to learn more about their goals.

What services do Employment Counsellors provide?

  • Provide information about education and training programs
  • Assist clients with locating employment or self-employment opportunities, write resumes, develop portfolios and prepare for interviews
  • Offer job search assistance
  • Assist clients to identify educational requirements and develop training plans
  • Provide current labour market information to assist clients to make realistic occupational or employment decisions
  • Market clients to potential employers and help clients find job or work experience placements
  • Assist clients with implementing effective employment search strategies, writing resumes, and developing career portfolios and interview skills
  • Refer clients to appropriate services to address their particular needs
